I became aware to the industry leaders fund (ILF) through my previous time with the AI group and was encouraged to apply by my peers and leadership team. Receiving this scholarship has undoubtedly changed the direction of my career path and allowed me to develop my leadership potential. Working for a global defense company, BAE Systems designs, manufactures and maintains a wide range of defense products for the commonwealth and our partners. BAE systems is a highly innovative company with a strong reputation of being able to deliver solutions to complex problems.
The ILF funded part of my bachelor’s degree at the Adelaide University. I chose the bachelor of innovation and entrepreneurship as it was a good fit for both myself and my employer. Majority of the course was undertaken in week blocks, this flexibility made it easy to schedule around other ongoing commitments. This program has been valuable as I have seen the relationship between theory and how it’s applied in the workplace. Undertaking further study has allowed me to develop my leadership abilities whilst building upon my trade background, providing me with a unique perspective. The degree covered a vast range of topics including leadership, business strategy, accounting, finance, legal aspects of new ideas, economics, marketing etc. The teaching staff have also been incredible with many of them being actively involved in businesses and the startup community, this firsthand experience allowed them to share their experiences and challengers with students. I am confident that the content of this course provides both the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to understand and navigate today’s business environment. Attending regular training and networking events held by the ILF has provided additional learning and given me the appreciation of the diverse and competent business leaders here in South Australia.
Moving forward I aim to keep developing my knowledge and leadership capabilities. Since completing this course I have developed the ability to recognize opportunities, validate business ideas and develop strategies for commercialization. Successfully completing this course will now allow me to progress my career and be considered for future leadership roles. I am incredibly thankful to have had this opportunity and sincerely thank the ILF for their support.
