Donald Kay (ILF2019)

Institution: University of Adelaide
Course: Transformative Leadership Program in Adelaide & Texas

I came to know the Industry Leaders Fund as the CEO would attend the electronics industry networking events that I was involved in organizing.  I was inspired to be more deliberate about my leadership skills and apply for a grant to help support that.  While I felt supported in the grant application process – it was none the less challenging.

The question that sticks with me was “What do you hope to learn from this course?”  I thought that if I knew that I’d just look it up and wouldn’t need a course on it.  It should not be a surprise that with the long and deep industry experience of each of the panel members that this made sense but I was still a little surprised that I was successful in getting the grant and recommended to do the Transformative Leadership Program (TLP) with PACE (University of Adelaide).

I completed half of the course in 2019.  I’d already learned a lot, not just about leadership and concepts like dealing with a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world and Cynefin but mostly about myself.  I was keen to take this further in the second half of the course but a work situation arose that kept me from completing the course.  Then came covid.  The concepts and the experience even in the first half of the course played a big role in our company navigating and growing through that time.

By the time I could do the full course it was 2023.  Our transformation is never complete and I have since participated in a follow up program arranged by some of the alumni and facilitated by Unchartered Leadership.

The TLP program and the deep network of our cohort has made a huge improvement to my company and the contribution I can make back to the industry through Electronics Industry Development Adelaide (EIDA).  Without the ILF I would have not been inspired to go down this path.
