Institution: MIT (Boston, Cambridge)
Course: Driving Strategic Innovation Program

In September 2022, I had the privilege of attending the “Driving Strategic Innovation” course offered by IMD in collaboration with MIT Sloan in Boston. This transformative experience was made possible through the support of the Industry Leaders Fund (ILF), for which I am deeply grateful.

The program brought together a very diverse group of global executives to delve into the rapidly evolving landscape of innovation. Through a combination of lectures, case studies, and workshops, we explored the complexities of strategic innovation in today’s increasing faster business environment.

One of the key insights I gained was the power of ecosystem innovation. The course emphasized how forging strong, win-win partnerships can lead to successful innovation ecosystems. By collaborating closely with partners who share mutual goals, organizations can drive innovation more effectively and create value that benefits all parties involved.

Another significant learning was understanding the accelerating waves of innovation. The pace at which new technologies and ideas are emerging presents immense opportunities for those who remain open and adaptable. Embracing this rapid change is crucial for staying competitive and leveraging new market possibilities.

We also examined various models that aid in framing and communicating strategic innovation. These tools are invaluable for articulating a clear vision, aligning teams, and executing innovative strategies within an organization.

Since completing the course, I have actively applied these insights to my professional endeavours. This has culminated in a successful business exit and a strategic merger. Leveraging the principles of ecosystem innovation and remaining receptive to rapid changes allowed us to achieve significant milestones and position our organization for future growth.

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Geoff, Suzi, and the ILF board for giving me this life-changing opportunity. The experience in Boston is one that I will never forget and has equipped me to drive value creation in South Australia and globally.
