Managing Director,
Blue Crystal Solutions
Owner/ President Management Program, Harvard Business School, 2019
After more than two decades leading a company that has grown and adapted through every shift in the IT landscape, Vito Rinaldi pauses to reflect on the path that brought him here.

His fascination with technology began as a member of the computer club at Woodville High School, then through hands‑on roles in higher education and early career roles in programming, development and systems support.
“I got into IT because I was fascinated by the idea that you could push a button in Adelaide and cause a tidal wave in Japan.”
Those early years gave him the grounding he needed to build something of his own.
“I knew I could do things better than other organisations. I knew I could solve business problems.”
Today, Blue Crystal Solutions is shaped by that same mindset: stay adaptable, stay curious, and stay close to the client’s real problem. Under Vito’s leadership, the company has evolved from day‑to‑day troubleshooting to delivering strategic, high‑level solutions for organisations with complex operational needs.
“Running an IT company is like dancing on hot coals… ever‑changing.”
The early challenge, he recalls, wasn’t the technology — it was earning the trust of the right clients in a market dominated by major players. But consistent delivery, proof of concept, and a reputation for doing what they say they’ll do helped the business carve out its place.
“Getting the opportunity — the ticket to the dance — is the hardest part. But once clients choose us, they trust us.”
Harvard Business School — OPM
Vito’s decision to undertake the Owner/President Management (OPM) program at Harvard Business School marked a turning point. Nine intensive weeks surrounded by global leaders reshaped how he thinks about strategy, people, markets, and the future of technology.
“We’ve evolved from simply setting our future strategy to learning how to change lanes — to keep doing what we do well, while stretching ourselves enough to evolve. The strategy we set two or three years ago has led us to where we are now.”

Leadership Growth
The program also sharpened Vito’s leadership approach. Learning alongside influential leaders and world‑class professors left a lasting imprint.
“You end up mixing with some of the best leaders in the world. It rubs off on you. You start asking yourself: how would this person approach this decision, based on what I learned from them at Harvard?”
“I’m becoming a more strategic, defined, and pragmatic leader. I’m more composed than I was. Harvard taught me to base decisions on strategy — not to act too quickly, but to find a strategic way forward.”
The ILF Experience
The ILF grant opened doors to new networks — both locally and internationally — and connected Vito with South Australian leaders who share a commitment to the state’s long‑term prosperity.
ILF members, he says, care deeply about South Australia, its people, and its future.
He also credits the ILF with giving him the confidence to pursue the unknown.
“The ILF grant allows you to try something new and step into the unknown. It’s world‑class and first‑class. If it wasn’t for the ILF, I probably wouldn’t have applied for this course. It helped me see things in a different light.”
