Institution: University of Adelaide
Course: Transformative Leadership Program in Adelaide & Texas
Institution: Shinka Management
Course: Lean Japan Tour
Encouraged to apply by previous ILF scholar Corrina Wright, from Olivers Taranga I was honoured to receive an ILF grant to support my participation in two incredible programs: the Transformative Leadership Program (TLP) at the University of Adelaide and the Lean Japan Tour through Shinka Management. Both experiences have profoundly shaped my leadership approach and brought lasting benefits to our business.
The Lean Japan Tour provided a deep dive into the principles of kaizen and lean management, offering practical insights into creating efficiencies in business operations. The tour combined facility visits with classroom-based training, giving us a firsthand view of how lean principles are applied in real-world settings. The opportunity to network with participants from around the globe was invaluable, as we shared experiences and discussed how to implement lean practices in our respective organisations. Beyond the professional learning, the cultural experience of being immersed in Japan added a unique and enriching dimension to the trip. As a result, we have introduced visual management systems in both our design and manufacturing spaces, improving communication and collaboration across the team. This marks just the beginning of our lean journey, as we continue seeking new ways to optimise our processes.
The Transformative Leadership Program was equally impactful, delivering both personal and professional growth. While I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, the course exceeded all expectations. It provided me with tools to reflect on my leadership style, better understand my team, and navigate the complexities of modern workplaces. The program emphasised the importance of fostering diverse perspectives, building a strong workplace culture, and leading with empathy—all critical skills in today’s business environment. The connections formed with facilitators Andrew and Barry, as well as with my cohort, have created an enduring support network that continues to guide me through challenges and opportunities alike.
An added bonus of the ILF funding was the chance to be a part of the TLP and ILF alumni communities, providing ongoing learning and networking opportunities. I also benefited immensely from the ILF mentoring program, which paired me with Mark Nykiel from Philmac. Over the course of a year, Mark offered invaluable guidance, challenged my perspectives, and helped me refine strategies for our business’s growth. The mentorship experience was a game-changer, providing insights that will have a lasting impact.
Overall, I am deeply grateful for the opportunities afforded by the ILF grant. These experiences have not only shaped my leadership style but have also contributed directly to the continued growth and success of our business. I cannot recommend these programs highly enough to anyone seeking transformative personal and professional development.
