Receiving a grant to undertake the Company Directors Course at the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) has made a significant contribution to my professional journey, adding substantial value to my development and expertise. It has significantly enhanced my ability to execute my chair role and has directly contributed to my effectiveness as CEO of the Health and Medical Innovation District, where I reported to the Board.
I began the application process during the COVID period, a time marked by extensive travel restrictions that were anticipated to persist for an extended duration. Fortunately, I was presented with excellent opportunities within Australia, and the timing of this AICD opportunity proved ideal as it aligned perfectly with the commencement of my role as chair. The experience has been one of reflection, growth, and inspiration. The insights gained have proven invaluable in leading with confidence, guiding strategic discussions, and fostering a culture of accountability and innovation. The principles of effective governance I have learned guided me how I approach critical responsibilities, from overseeing financial performance to navigating risk and aligning the institution’s purpose with its long-term goals.
The AICD Company Directors Course delivered a comprehensive understanding of the responsibilities and dynamics of governance. Over five intensive days and some comprehensive pre-course reading materials, it covered crucial topics such as legal and ethical responsibilities of directors, financial and risk management, board dynamics, and strategic decision-making. The practical curriculum included real-world case studies that brought the complexities of governance to life.
One of the highlights of the course was the numerous opportunities to collaborate with a diverse cohort of experienced leaders from various industries. These interactions broadened my perspective on governance challenges and strategies, enriching the learning experience. The network I developed during the course has become a valuable resource for ongoing support and shared best practices.
The grant application process itself provided a platform for self-reflection and strategic planning. It encouraged me to critically evaluate my leadership journey, articulate my goals, and identify how I could leverage this course to drive positive change within my professional journey.
