Course: Authentic Leader Development Program
Participating in the Authentic Leadership Program at Harvard Business School in May 2024 was a profoundly enriching experience – one that has left a lasting impact on both my professional and personal life. I am deeply grateful to the Industry Leaders Fund for their generous support through a scholarship, which made this opportunity possible. Without their backing, I would not have been able to engage in such a transformative journey of leadership development. The program brought together senior executives from around the world, each committed to becoming more effective, authentic leaders. From the very beginning, the environment fostered openness, trust, and deep personal reflection. We were encouraged to share our stories, fears, and aspirations with honesty and vulnerability – something that is rare in most professional settings. This atmosphere of confidentiality and mutual respect allowed for genuine connection and learning. One of the most powerful aspects of the program was its focus on self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Through a combination of faculty-led sessions, case studies, and small group discussions, I was guided to reflect on the formative experiences that have shaped my leadership journey. These reflections helped me uncover patterns in my behaviour, identify blind spots, and better understand the values that drive me. It became clear that authentic leadership begins with knowing oneself – our motivations, our strengths, and the areas where we need to grow. A key takeaway from the program was the importance of aligning leadership with personal values and purpose. We were encouraged to articulate our core beliefs and consider how they influence our decisions and interactions. This exercise helped me reconnect with the deeper reasons I chose to lead in the first place. It reminded me that leadership is not just about achieving results, it’s about making a meaningful impact, fostering trust, and inspiring others to reach their potential. The creation of a personal leadership development plan was another highlight. This plan, informed by the insights gained throughout the program, outlines specific goals for my continued growth. It includes commitments to seek regular feedback, invest in mentoring relationships, and maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. It also reinforces the importance of leading by example – demonstrating integrity, setting high standards, and cultivating a culture of authenticity and shared responsibility. One of the most inspiring elements of the program was hearing from other leaders who had navigated complex challenges with courage and resilience. Their stories reinforced the idea that authentic leadership is not about being perfect, but about being real, owning our mistakes, learning from them, and staying true to our values even under pressure. These lessons have already begun to influence how I approach leadership in my own organisation. Equally important was the program’s emphasis on leading an integrated life. Balancing the demands of leadership with personal wellbeing is a challenge many of us face. The tools and frameworks provided helped me reflect on how to better align my professional responsibilities with my personal priorities. I left with a renewed commitment to sustainability, not just in terms of business outcomes, but in terms of personal fulfilment and long-term resilience. The relationships formed during the program were another unexpected gift. The shared experience of vulnerability and growth created strong bonds among participants. I now have a global network of peers who I can turn to for support, advice, and inspiration. These connections are invaluable as I continue to evolve as a leader. In closing, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the Industry Leaders Fund. Your support enabled me to participate in a world-class program that has profoundly shaped my leadership journey. I return to my role with a clearer sense of purpose, a deeper understanding of myself, and a renewed commitment to lead with authenticity and impact. This experience has been a true privilege, and I am committed to paying it forward by applying what I’ve learned in service of my team, my organisation, and the broader community.
